Hekate: Queen of Thresholds
Hekate Trivia, Goddess-Witch-Queen, is the animating power of thresholds, doorways, boundaries and portals and the liminal in-betweens, neither here nor there, the hypnagogic state. Third eye blindness prevents us from perceiving the energetic significance of these edges and borderlands, but they remain active whether we see them or not. The animating power of the threshold and boundary line, which holds within itself the power to allow passage through it, is eternal and unchanging; what changes are the material expressions of them, our abilities to interact with them and our ways of describing them.
Reading about the animating powers, the gods and goddesses of our ancestors, is very different to experiencing them and often leads to distancing, separation and disdain – even if you believe in them. Especially if you believe them, as belief gets you stuck in your head. The ancient gods and goddesses are no longer ‘real’ to most of us, because we have unwittingly cleaved reality into real and not real, a false duality that cuts us off from the power of our imagination. There is only one reality, a unity of existence served up in a myriad ways, some dishes being more appetizing then others. For example, a character who shows up in a dream is no more or less real than your next door neighbour, he/she/it just happens to exist in a different neighbourhood. Lies are real even though they are not true. Virtual reality is real pixels, not real people.
In antiquity, existence was perceived as three principle realms, each subject to its own laws and physics: the heavens, the earth and the underworld. The heavens is the domain of the gods, angels and the celestial bodies, the earth is the surface world of our waking lives and the underworld is dreamland, the subconscious dimension occupied by all manner of exotics. Hekate is a one way that our pre-Christian European ancestors viewed the boundary between these worlds, as a single ‘thing’ showing up in many places and deciding for itself whether to open up and grant passage, or not. In other mythologies, the guardian and threshold have been separated. The guardian is presented as a character who grants passage across the threshold, such as Anubis, Cerberus of the Ferryman. The threshold itself is usually referred to as a river, veil or tunnel, but is part of the scenery, without its own story and devoid of consciousness. This separates us from the ability to interact with this awesome power.
It doesn’t matter what you call the power of the threshold, the point is to experience it for yourself. Once you recognize ‘it’, in any of Her forms a portal opens within your body/mind to the deeper awe and wonder of Nature. In Her later Roman era statuary, Hekate was often shown as holding three keys. Hekate Trivia is Hekate of the three ways and some devotees still invoke Her at three-way crossroads. She is also shown as Hekate of the Middle Pillar, indicating that She has already given Her power to you; Her animating power is in you, in the porosity of your cell membranes, in the pathway between heart and mind, as the corpus callosum in your brain and as the portal to ancestral memory. Left and right, up and down, forwards and backwards, good and evil only exist relative to your position at the centre. Every move you make, physically, emotionally or mentally, you cross a threshold to occupy a new centre and this crossing generates a surge of energy that supports the web of life. The energy of the crossing closes some doors and opens others, supporting life in ways that are beyond our knowing – although we are not without influence.
Ancient people knew how to work with the power of thresholds, as evidenced by their great monuments aligned with the threshold times of the equinoxes and solstices, the rising of Sirius, Orion and the hibernation of Great Mama Bear in winter. Their rituals were at sunset and sunrise, the moments of the still point in which the power if an intervention is greatly amplified because it is received at the threshold. The same principle is applied in cranial sacral therapy, where the therapist intervenes with a tiny movement of the skull in the pause before the wave of spinal fluid changes direction. Most of this wisdom is lost to us today, but that gives us the opportunity to learn it afresh in a novel way, appropriate to the times in which we live. These are the times in which ‘power’ is moving into new avenues. Hekate is one of the old goddesses, the daughter of a Titan, but also known as a household goddess, because She grants anybody access to play with the gods in their ordinary everyday lives. She works closely with Mr Luigi, allowing passage across all realms and dimensions.
You can interact with Hekate right at your own front door. Your front door is an important threshold as it forms the boundary between your place of sanctuary and the outside world. Much like an electric fence to keep livestock in or predators out, you activate this threshold with the energetic quality of your feelings and thoughts. If you feel apprehension at the sound of an unexpected knock on your front door, it could be because you live in a dodgy neighbourhood, or that your threshold has been energized by other people’s fear. but it could also be an indication that you have energized your threshold with self-generated fear that you are also putting into the threshold web – the fear that closes doors. What can you do about it? How do you reassure your front door?
Nature does not speak English, nor any other idiom. The language of Nature is frequency (sound and colour), geometry, movement and number.
Most front doors are harmonized with the number three. This is Hekate’s number. If you put a group of three of the same thing, with a group of 16 of the same thing and stick them to the lintel above your door, Nature will protect your threshold. It will not work if you write the numeral ‘3’ and ‘16’, as the intelligence of Nature responds to groups of things, not the numbers themselves. The group of 16 things goes with the three things so that Nature recognizes that the three is part of a greater whole. 16 represents phi, a number that the Great Mother recognizes as Her perfected work (the golden ratio) which brings stability to the harmonization.
Below is an image of a home-made ‘lentils for lintels’ doorway harmonizer. sLentils for lintels are very effective. You can test this for yourself.
I did not harmonize the new threshold we created when we put up a fence and gates at the front entrance to our property – I intended to do it, but it was raining. I did not know at the time that there was an earth energy grid, a Curry zone line, crossing right at the gate. The earth grid lines are affected by human emotions and water and where a grid line and a threshold intersect there is an energy surge. Many thresholds are currently closed with fear, so where there is an opening the energy surge can be harsher. This is what happened at the unharmonized gate: Dean had to go to town, with some urgency and a little anxiety, which affected the grid lines. After he left, ultra-sensitive Freya (she has vaccine damage and is subject to parasites more than our other dogs), crossed the threshold and the vertical energy went into her. Vertical earth energy (identified as vertical negative green) kills parasites and will move into the most infected host in the vicinity, with terrifying speed. Freya immediately attacked Izzy and there was nothing I could do. We spent the rest of the day identifying and harmonizing the grid lines and thresholds and have not had any problems with them since. However, the energy surged elsewhere – which helped me learn how it works – until it was purged by the fire.
We are in threshold times. The golden age draws closer through every step over a new boundary. Doors are closed, so others can open – all managed by the animating power of the threshold. This is how change happens on a global scale. Harmonizing your threshold helps keeps you in the flow of beneficial energy and protects you from grid lines infected with harmful energy, freeing it to move to infected hosts, where it is needed most.
Whom she will she greatly aids and advances: she sits by worshipful kings in judgment, and in the assembly whom she will is distinguished among the people. And when men arm themselves for the battle that destroys men, then the goddess is at hand to give victory and grant glory readily to whom she will. Good is she also when men contend at the games, for there too the goddess is with them and profits them … and to those whose business is in the grey discomfortable sea, and who pray to Hekate and the loud-crashing Earth-Shaker [Poseidon], easily the glorious goddess gives great catch, and easily she takes it away as soon as seen, if so she will. She is good in the byre with Hermes to increase the stock. The droves of kine and wide herds of goats and flocks of fleecy sheep, if she will, she increases from a few, or makes many to be less.
